MG Spring 25 with Great Sails and Optional Road Trailer

We’ve decided to put a unique boat on the market at a bargain price.

‘Blue Streak’ is a good example of the popular MG Spring 25 model, made famous by the television series, Howards Way. Around 150 of these popular Tony Castro-designed boats were built. The MG Spring 25s are known for their spritely performance and roomy interior. MG Spring 25 are CE Category C for use on inshore coastal waters, large bays and estuaries and they are popular on inland lakes as they just fit inside maximum size limits for admittance or mooring in locations such as Coniston, Ullswater and Rutland Water.

The MG Spring 25 comes with six berths in two cabins with 5’11” max. standing headroom. An open-plan saloon with a large U-shaped seating area and a table which drops to form a double berth and a forepeak double V berth forward. There is a galley to port with a stove, cool box and sink and a chart table to starboard with stowage and seating space as well as a switch panel. The enclosed heads are aft to starboard with Jabsco marine toilet and wash basin. Hand-pumped cold freshwater is supplied to the galley sink and heads basin. Up on deck the MG Spring 25 has a well-protected cockpit with ample drainholes and a spacious cockpit locker.

Launched in 1988, Blue Streak is a rare find, as she is currently fitted with an electric-start 9.9 HP Yamaha extra-long-shaft outboard engine, complete with remote throttle and gear controls. As well as the obvious weight advantage, this particular setup means that the engine can be connected to the boat’s tiller, This overcomes the perennial problem of manoeuvring these twin-rudder boats at low speeds when the central inboard prop provides no wash over the foils. The engine is remote-operated from a throttle/gear control in the cockpit, and it can also be raised to reduce any drag. The engine could cost-effectively be exchanged for an electric outboard if combustion engines are not permitted in your sailing location.
Another unique feature is that Blue Streak’s rig was adapted with a Bamar kit to enable in-mast roller reefing of the main. No need to leave the cockpit for reefing. The Sanders mainsail looks to be in outstanding condition – it has clearly been rarely used. If in-mast reefing is not desired, then the kit can be removed from the mast and the boom, and a conventional slab-reefed main could be fitted. The Sanders Sails jib is also in good condition, probably with 2/3 more seasons’ use, and furls on a Plastima 608-S furler. Blue Streak also comes with a running kite, complete with snuffer and spinnaker pole.

We have actually had Blue Streak on site for a few years and managed the odd job on her every now and then, but there were always more pressing or lucrative projects to finish. As is the case now. So, we have grudgingly made the decision to offer her for sale now at a substantially reduced price with most of the necessary work done but some jobs left to do.

Over the years we have:

• Removed an aging shore power set up and replaced it with a new installation, complete with cabling, a shore power socket, and including an RCD unit, etc.
• Sanded and varnished much of the internal woodwork, including the companionway entrance, doors, floorboards, cabin table and chart table.
• Removed an ageing gas stove and replaced it with an Origo 3000 twin-burner spirit stove unit which is much safer (the old Plastimo stove is still available, and the gimbals could be reused).
• Rewired the mast and added a new deck/steaming light and VHF cabling
• All running rigging moused out of the mast and boom, laundered and dry-stored
• Replaced the leisure battery
• Replaced the guard wire
• Replaced both trailer axles, brakes, bearings and cables as well as new wheels, tyres, breakaway cables and the central brake rod (All in May 2026).
• Made gelcoat repairs to the toe rail and the bow where the boat has taken some knocks
• Replaced some of the rubbing strake inlays
• Made gelcoat repairs to the bottom of the rudders
• Repaired a bulkhead join and re-seated the heads’ holding tank
• Had the cushions laundered and dry-stored
• Had the white sails laundered and dry-stored
• Painted the stern which had become quite crazed
• Painted new livery
• Antifouled (July 2026).

Basically the Blue Streak is ready to go in the water but we haven’t sea-trialled her. So, we can’t warrant if everything works. Hence the low price. We welcome viewings and/or a survey by a marine surveyor. In the absence of a survey, we at least recommend the following:

• The sea cocks are in-water tested or replaced as a precaution.
• The log and depth transducers should be in-water tested (the screen works fine).
• The outboard engine is serviced, and a new starter battery is added.
• A rig check is carried out, as we have not had the mast up. The running rigging should be moused back into the spars and both furlers should be tested also.

In the longer term we would recommend the following:

• The window seals are replaced. The portlights seem to stand the pressure washer test, but some of the seals are quite old and no longer spongy. There was a slight drip from both fixed windows when directing a pressure washer at them.
• The coolbox is actually a fridge, but we have assumed that it no longer works. It should be tested and/or the refrigeration unit replaced if a buyer wishes to re-instate the fridge.
• The engine cowling of the outboard has a crack in it – a small repair would be helpful.
• The gelcoat on the topsides is becoming quite thin in places, so it ought to be recoated in time.
• Sections of the rubbing strake have been repaired/replaced over time – a complete renewal would be more aesthetically pleasing.

The trailer is optional. If not taken, we can tow the boat to your location for £1/mile + VAT.
